Plenty set for big run

Registration for the Cayman Islands Marathon looks good with just over two months to go.

So far 173 people have registered for the event on Sunday 6 December from Breezes by the Bay. That includes 101 in the half marathon, 44 in the full marathon and seven relay teams.

Last year over 550 competed and this year the organisers want nearer 800.

Event organiser Bev Sinclair of Kelly Holding Ltd said: ‘Of these 94 are visitors to the island – which is a massive 54 per cent! They are coming from USA, Canada, UK mainly and others from Australia, Finland and Italy.

‘This compares favourably to last year at this time when we only had 140 registered runners and only 69 were visitors.’

The runner loyalty programme, where local runners who have participated in the race for three consecutive years will get the early registration fee whenever they register.

The Tech running shirt, pasta party and post race party are all included in registration.

The sponsors of the Cayman Marathon are: Department of Tourism, Ministry of Sports, Gatorade, Flowers Bottled Water, Corona Light, Digicel, Cayman National, Sagicor, Breezes By the Bay Restaurant, Cayman Free Press, Kirk Freeport, 106.1 KISS FM, Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort, Island Companies, ESSO, Quaker, CUC, Volkswagen, Tropicana, KPMG, GNC, RE/MAX Cayman Islands and The Final Touch

Sinclair added that they are looking for volunteers. They can email the organisers at [email protected].
