NHL competes with local games

Tonight should be a good one for hockey lovers.

On TV there will be a trio interesting match-ups on tap that see the Detroit Red Wings, Buffalo Sabres and the Calgary Flames all in action.

At King’s Sports Centre some of Cayman’s most diehard hockey fans are set to do battle with skates, sticks and a puck.

A pair of games is set to take place to mark the second week of the WestTel Adult Roller Hockey League.

At 8pm CDMS takes on the Barracudas with the Budget Beavers and the Mepco High Rollers doing battle at 9pm.

The first match-up will see both clubs looking for their first win.

Both have their fair share of local sports stars with Brendon Malice and hockey enthusiast Dave Champoux leading the charge for CDMS.

Meanwhile local sportsman Fareed Hosein and hockey dad extraordinaire Patrick Agemian lead the Barracudas.

The second match pits the two top teams in action.

Budget comes into the game with the most goals scored (18) in the league.

Guiding the team thus far are top scorers Tim McDonald (two assists, seven goals, nine points), Mark Missal (three goals, three assists, six points) and Rob Leadbetter (three goals, two assists, five points).

The High Rollers meanwhile boast a solid team with some intriguing pieces including local hockey force Wolfgang Brocklebank and local tennis club manager and Canadian hockey supporter Rob Seward.

Tonight’s matches come after the league saw its first games last Tuesday.

Mepco beat CDMS 5-4 with Eric Mildenberger (two goals) and Ryan MacMillian (one goal and one assist) leading the High Rollers to victory.

Budget won a shootout with the Barracudas 12-8 as McDonald, Missal and Leadbetter had a game for the record books.

Games are played every Tuesday from 8pm at Kings.
