Five-a-side football is one of the most enjoyable forms of the beautiful game and that is reflected by the increasing popularity of the format in Cayman.
The new season kicked off with Division One games at the WestTel Arena of King’s Sports Centre on Monday with Division Two and Three games on following nights.
The Caymanian Compass team – fresh from winning the Division Three playoff title against league champs Hi Tension in October – kick off their Division Three action tonight at 7pm.
The CFP Buzz Crusaders face the Doghouse Devils Reserves.
Ray Singh, King’s athletic director, started the five-a-side programme only a few years ago and has seen it flourish.
‘We’re expecting this coming season to be another great one,’ Singh said. ‘With 25 teams registered amongst the three divisions, the league should be very well balanced. There are six teams registered for our premier Division One, which is always a competitive league.
‘The Division Two Recreational programme has 13 teams playing, all of which are returning veteran squads. This season also sees an increase in our Division Three Social league with six teams participating.
‘The feedback from last season has been great. Last season was our smoothest programme to date, as the teams have settled into a nice groove. Players know what to expect from the league, and the introduction of the social league was the only new feature to the programme.
‘Although there were some hiccups with the social league last season, having six squads this time around is great for the development of the overall WestTel Five-A-Side Tournament.’
Singh has exciting plans for next year. He said: ‘Into 2010, we are looking to finally introduce the ‘Battle of the Americas’ tournament, which is one of the legs of the Cayman World Cup of Football circuit.
‘The Cayman World Cup tournament is tentatively scheduled for early February, and we are anticipating upwards of 16 national teams participating.’
