Caribbean Reading Club discusses Wide Sargasso Sea

 Books &
Books welcomes Assistant Professor of English Keith Jardim and the Caribbean
Reading Club group back on Wednesday, 10 March at 8pm to discuss their first
book, Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys.

The book’s
author, Jean Rhys’ reputation was founded on the publication of this passionate
novel, in which she brings into light one of fiction’s most mysterious
characters: the madwoman in the attic from Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre.

Set in the
Caribbean, its heroine is Antoinette Cosway, a sensual and protected young
woman who is sold into marriage to the prideful Rochester. In this best-selling
novel, Rhys portrays a society so driven by hatred, so skewed in its sexual
relations, that it can literally drive a woman out of her mind.

Attend the
group meeting and share your impressions of this famous Caribbean novel. The
Caribbean Reading Club is open to the public, free to join and meets on the
second Wednesday of the month at 8pm.
