Cayman’s canines strut their stuff

Cayman’s animal lovers descended on
Camana Bay Saturday, 20 February for the annual Cayman Islands dog show,
organised by the Cayman Islands Humane Society.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes were
represented, from tiny Pomeranians to massive Great Danes and everything in

The crowd was kept entertained by
master of ceremonies Vicki Wheaton and the event even warranted a visit from
His Excellency the Governor Duncan Taylor.

There were categories to suit all
entrants, from puppies to seniors and even a best personality division. The
owners also had their moment in the sun, with a category for best junior
handler open to owners under 10 years old.

The show also had a division for
best neutered male and female, reinforcing the Humane Society’s focus on
eradicating unwanted breeding through the spaying and neutering of pets. There
were also categories for best rescued dog, cross breeds and even the ubiquitous
Cayman dogs.

Of course, the more traditional
best in show award was also contested.

Among the more creative categories
were best costume and best trick.

Although some contestants seemed
quite overwhelmed by the smell and sound of so many unfamiliar dogs around
them, the event passed without too much incident.

The competition was housed in the
shade of a big marquee with separate arenas for the male and female dogs. The
area around the arena was dotted with the stalls of various pet-related service
providers on Island, including Island Veterinary Services, St. Matthew’s
University School of Veterinary Medicine and the Cayman Islands Humane Society.

The event helped to raise awareness
and funds for the Humane Society and their work with abandoned animals in

The event was sponsored by Animal
House, Pedigree and Camana Bay.
