St. George’s Day, celebrated
on 23 April as England’s
National Day, will be a noteworthy date on the Cayman social calendar as well,
thanks to Colin Wilson and friends.
They hope to raise money for an afterschool programme
by hosting a gala evening with dinner, dancing, a silent auction and world-class entertainment by international
singing star, Lisa Carlisle.
Mr. Wilson knows entertainment from all angles. He
is the former managing director of CITN/Cayman 27 television station and a
long-time active member of the
Cayman Drama Society.
The idea for the festive affair came to him as he
was considering how to raise funds for Positive Intervention Now, an afterschool
intervention programme for at-risk adolescents that is operated by St. George’s Anglican
George’s Day used to be observed in Cayman, Mr. Wilson
recalled in a recent interview. It was a light-hearted occasion for getting
together and singing patriotic songs. He thought the last such celebration was
about 28 years ago.

the significance of St. George’s
Day and support the event, which will be held at The Wharf Restaurant. Serendipitously,

While plans for the fund-raiser were in their
earliest stage, Mr. Wilson was in Scotland, where he heard a singer
over the radio who captured his attention. She was Lisa Carlisle.
He made all the necessary contacts and was delighted
to be able to bring her to Cayman.
“We are very
excited to welcome Lisa Carlisle to the Cayman Islands
and I hope people will take advantage of this unique opportunity to experience her
amazing talent,” Mr. Wilson said. “She is a classically trained soprano soloist
whose repertoire includes musical theatre, light jazz, opera and classical crossover.”
Tickets for the St. George’s Celebration and Banquet cost
$125 per person and include a three-course dinner and souvenir programme. Corporate discounts are also available.
