Jazz and swing concert

Interplay: An evening of music is being held at the
Harquail Theatre on Saturday, 27 March.

The concert will feature performances by guest artist
saxophonist/pianist Fred Haas with his wife, and musical partner, the jazz
singer Sabrina Brown; George Hicks High School swing band The Swingrays and
adult swing band Cool School, headed by Wil Steward with guest vocalists
Isabella Rooney, Sue Howe and Neil Rooney. Glen Inanga and other guest artistes
are also expected to perform, according to the event organiser Wil Steward.

The show, starting at
7.30pm, is scheduled to finish at 10pm, and will have an intermission, according
to Mr. Steward.

Mr. Haas is an Ivy League
music professor at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. The renowned jazz musician
has played with such musical icons as Ray Charles and the Dorsey Band.

During
Interplay, he will
perform alongside vocalist Ms Brown. The pair will also be performing in
concert at the Grand Old House
jazz night on Thursday, 25 March.

She
performs Broadway hits and contemporary jazz.The singer and her husband
are the founders of Interplay Jazz, an educational/performance based jazz
programme in New England, which merges the practice of yoga and meditation with
the improvisation of music.

Cool School was formed in 2004 and has a floating
membership.

Mr. Steward said that the proceeds from the concert,
after expenses, will be donated to the University College of the Cayman Islands
and the George Hicks High School’s music programmes.

The Cool School band leader said: “It has
been a dream Fred, Sabrina and I have been developing for several years to
establish an annual workshop in Cayman involving local students and musicians.

“We also hope to attract more students to attend the
annual week-long summer workshop in Woodstock, Vermont, 27 June to 2 July,
2010.”

Tickets, costing $20 for adults and $10 students,
are available from Barnett’s Music shop, Foster’s Food Fair at the Airport and
Foster’s at the Strand as well as from Neil Rooney, at 943-8000. Admittance is
free for children younger than 12.

As well as the Harquail concert, Mr. Haas and Ms
Brown will lead three workshops in the Music room at the University College of
the Cayman Islands.

She will lead a jazz vocal workshop on Friday, 26
March, 7-10pm.

Mr. Haas’ jazz improvisation workshop on Saturday,
27 March, 9am to 12 noon, will provide a holistic approach to learning to
improvise, and will use a variety of instruments (piano, bass, strings, saxophone
trumpet and drums). His saxophone workshop will be held on Wednesday, 24 March,
7-10pm.
