The Friends of Cayman in London
hosted an event at the House of Commons, Westminster two weeks ago to raise
funds for Cayman Islands athletes who will be attending at the Island Games, to
be held in the Isle of Wight next year. CI$22,000 was raised.
Richard Parchment, Chairman of the
Cayman Islands Island Games Association, thanked the Friends Group.
Parchment said of the uniqueness of
the Island Games: “It is the only multi-sport Games that the Cayman Islands
participates in, where Caymanians and residents can compete side by side for
the Cayman Islands.”
Cayman will likely field teams from
athletics, basketball, golf, sailing, shooting, swimming, tennis and volleyball,
plus possibly squash, windsurfing, badminton and cycling.
The fundraiser’s principal
organizer, former Governor, John Owen, said: “This has been a most successful
evening. The amount of money raised has exceeded my expectations and I am most
grateful to all the Friends of Cayman and their guests, who so generously supported
