United World College alumna Helen
Allen was recently awarded the 2009 UWC Cayman Team Leader of the Year Award.
She was presented with her award in
recognition of her contribution in helping to raise US$20,000 in 2009 for the
UWC (Cayman Islands) National Foundation, as well as for her volunteer efforts
in the promotion of the education of youth in the Cayman Islands.
The United World College Foundation is a global
movement that brings together students from over 120 countries to make education
the uniting force so that people, nations and cultures can bring about peace
and a sustainable future.
Students from Cayman have a chance
to win a scholarship to attend one of the 13 international colleges that are
part of the United World Colleges network.

“We are most grateful to Helen
for her amazing contributions to our organisation over the years and in
particular for playing an instrumental role in raising such a significant sum,
which will be received from our generous corporate sponsor Deutsche Bank
(Cayman) Limited each year over a period of five years,” said Chairperson of
the Board Orchid Morrison.
“Individuals and corporate leaders
in our community such as Helen and Deutsche Bank help to further the UWC
mission to provide a high standard of education whilst helping to foster
international understanding and ultimately world peace.”
Mrs. Allen expressed her thanks to
the UWC Cayman Board, saying she was surprised and honoured to receive the
“UWC offers a unique education in an international
setting and I would like for as many young people growing up in a
multi-cultural society such as Cayman to have that experience,” she said.
“I am proud if I have contributed
in a small way to enable a few young Caymanians to do so over the next few
years. I trust that they will return with experiences, which will allow them to
contribute positively to Cayman society going forward,” she continued.
