Juniors swing on

Cayman’s top junior tennis players are set to clash
this weekend.

Friday 16 April and Saturday 17 April will see a
national tournament at the nine-court South Sound tennis club. Brothers Matteo,
Luca and Nicolas Polloni, William and Morgan Hayward, Alex Leonard and Marc
Reid are some of the hard-hitting, top-spinning juniors to be seen doing battle
at the two-day event.

Matches start on Friday afternoon and finals will be
staged on Saturday from around 3pm onwards. The event’s organizers are members
of the Tennis Federation of the Cayman Islands.
Youngsters will compete in three age categories: 10 and under; 13 and under;
and the 16 and under section.

This weekend’s tournament, sponsored by
PriceWaterhouseCoopers, will be the fifth junior competition staged by the Tennis
Federation for the 2009-10 season. The sixth and final tournament will be held
later this year.

Juniors have been ranked according to their progress
in this season’s tournaments; over 40 would-be tennis champions have taken part
in at least one tournament, with many having competed in three or four.

Local coaches have praised the creation of the new
junior circuit, saying it has led to the development of the youngsters’ performance
in matches as well as giving them strong incentives to practice, play and
win.

The tennis federation noted that its official
ranking system, introduced this season, has rendered some of Cayman’s top
juniors eligible to compete overseas. Those rankings can be seen on this page.
