Cayfest photo competition

This year’s Cayfest Photo
Competition and Exhibition attracted a record 472 entrants, according to Donna
Reid, programmes manager at the Cayman National Cultural Foundation.

She said: “This was an over 100 per
cent increase from 2009.”

The contest, which invited entries
into seven categories namely landscapes, portraits, animals, underwater,
photo-illustrations, close-ups and lifestyles, had its grand showing last
Wednesday, 14 April at the Harquail Theatre.

The prize-winning shots are on
display weekdays at the Harquail, 9am-5pm through 1 May. Anyone interested in
viewing the exhibit can gain admittance via the foundation’s administrative
offices at the rear of the theatre.

Chris Court swept the boards
winning first prize in the amateur close-up and lifestyle sections, as well as
coming first as the overall winner of the annual competition.

The graphic designer, who has been an amateur
photographer since 1996, was pleased to have done so well.

“Cayfest is great as it gives photography hobbyists
like myself the opportunity to show our work in a public forum,” he said.

The winners in each category received $150 (1st); $100
(2nd); $50 (3rd). Overall winners in youth and child
received $75 (1st); $50 (2nd) and $25 (3rd).

The
pictures were assessed by a judging panel, which comprised of David Goddard,
David Wolfe, Miguel Escalante, Patrick Broderick and Tessa Suckoo.

“The
entries were of a high standard and gave the judges some challenge on deciding
the eventual winners,” said Mrs. Reid.

“The
judges certainly enjoyed the experience and we at the CNCF are in agreement
with them.”

Cayman
Camera, Photo Plus, Island Photo, Cathy Church’s Underwater Photo Gallery and
Centre and The Camera Store offered a 50 per cent discount on prints for
photographic entries to the competition.
