A long-running cruise ship poker
tournament is over and organisers have given out $75,000 in prizes.
The 2009 The Carnival Poker Pro
Tournament Challenge was completed this January aboard the Carnival Freedom.
Six tables had been installed on
the ship in the Dynasty Lounge and between 24 and 30 January 127 players vied
for the top prize as the ship sailed between Key West,
Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.
The tournament had begun around a
year ago with a series of no limit Texas Hold’em tournaments aboard each ship
in Carnival’s fleet.
Finalists won a cruise on Carnival
Freedom as well as the opportunity to play for the main prize this year.
Winner of the competition was Scott
Mateosky of Ohio,
who sailed away with $35,000 with the rest of the top 10 players sharing the
The event is in its second year,
explained Rodney Defort, senior vice president of casino operations for
Carnival Corporation & plc. He said the company planned to begin preliminary
tournaments for qualifiers for the 2010 competition within the next few weeks.
“We look forward to an even larger
turnout at the 2010 final event,” he said.
