Grand Cayman census to launch

The official public launch of the
2010 Census in Grand Cayman takes place Thursday, 29 April, at Mary Miller Hall.

The public event will begin at 10am.

Governor Duncan Taylor, Premier
McKeeva Bush, and National Hero Sybil McLaughlin are key speakers at the event,
to which all are invited.

Census billboards, a video
presentation and the Census Jingle will be featured during the launch,
following which attendees will be able to sign up for a chance to become census
enumerators.

The census, which gathers
information about the population of Cayman, will be carried out in October.

It is conducted under the direction
of the Economics and Statistics Office.

The last population and housing
census in Cayman was done in October 1999. Prior to that, censuses have been
carried out in 1802, 1881, 1891, 1911, 1921,1934, 1943, 1960, 1970, 1979, and
1989.

The United Nations recommends all
countries to carry out a population and housing census every tenth year and the
2010 round of censuses should be carried out during the period 2005-2014.

The launch of the census on Cayman Brac was held
last week, on 22 April, at which residents were informed about the importance
of being counted.
