Conservative named to Under Secretary’s post

Conservative MP for North East
Bedfordshire Alistair Burt has been named as the Parliamentary Under-Secretary
of State for the UK’s
Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

That post typically is given
responsibility for the UK Overseas Territories in the Caribbean, including the Cayman Islands. However, it is still possible the new
coalition government could decide to shuffle those responsibilities.

Mr. Burt had previously served in
UK Parliament between 1983 and 1997, when he was one of several Conservative
MPs who lost their positions in that year’s elections. He had held the Bury
North seat in Parliament for 14. years.

In 2001, he was re-elected to North
East Bedfordshire where he has served since.

After the 2005 general election he
joined the front bench and served as a spokesman on the Local Government
Affairs Committee. In January 2008, Mr. Burt was promoted to Assistant Chief
Whip and Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party with responsibility for
Internal Development
