New moms keep fit with their babies

Baby BuggyFit is a new fitness
programme that runs $15 a session drop-in classes for new mothers who want to
get back into shape in a supportive and fun environment away from the gym.

Those eager to take part must be at
least six weeks post partum (eight weeks for C-section delivers) and should
have their doctor’s approval before participating.

The open-air classes work out in
Camana Bay and meet outside Haagen Dazs Mondays at 8am, Wednesdays at 8.30am
and Fridays at 8am.

Baby BuggyFit is described by its
owner and fitness instructor, Lori Rye, as an innovative fitness programme,
where mums take their babies to the class so the children and the stroller are
incorporated into the workout. The classes help moms regain or enhance
pre-pregnancy fitness levels while enabling them to bond with their babies and
with other post-natal moms. Other benefits of taking the class include reducing
the risk of postpartum depression and improving self-esteem.

Ms Rye has 12 years experience as a
personal trainer, as well as having set up the Baby BuggyFit programme in
Bermuda. Her 50-minute conditioning classes are designed to provide a good work
out while keeping both mothers and babies fully engaged.

Each class is different to avoid
boredom and consist of endurance, strength and core training for all fitness

Classes are only cancelled due to
bad weather, so participants are advised to wear appropriate clothing and a
buggy rain shield on days when it’s a little windy or there’s light rain.
Mothers are also advised to bring a mat or towel and a bottle of water to each

“I love teaching the class,” Ms Rye

“All the mums are getting fabulous
results and most are back to their pre-pregnancy weight… My job is to
motivate… and encourage them to listen to their bodies and their babies,” she

The social aspect of the classes
should not be overlooked, as they can be to be a good way for new mothers to
socialise with other moms.

“We had our first mummies’ social
club night out recently,” Ms Rye said.

“We’re planning to hold them every
second Wednesday of the month. The next one is on 9 June at Yoshi’s at 7.30pm.”
