On the surface, the Budget Beavers
and MEPCO High Rollers had every reason to expect to be playing well into May.
The squads have been the top sides
for years in the WestTel Adult Roller Hockey League. This season was no
different as the clubs were first and second place in the regular season.
MEPCO had won the last three
championships in consecutive fashion while Budget have boasted the best offense
and the top scorers in that time. All of that momentum screeched to a halt last
Tuesday as both sides lost in their opening round playoff games at Kings Sports
The Barracudas pulled off the epic
shocker first by taking out top seed MEPCO 6-4. Goalie Jeremy Olynik played a
great game for the Barracudas making well over 20 saves while the MEPCO offense
had no assists.
MEPCO captain Darryl Hather has
been with the High Rollers from inception and had a starring role throughout
its winning seasons. He offered his team some consolation after the game.
“It was a good run boys and I guess
all good things must come to an end,” Hather said. “We played hard out there
and we just couldn’t get enough shots past their goalie, that’s all.”
Budget were next to fall via a 6-5
score-line in overtime to the CDMS Islanders. Beavers goalie John Vanderwal was
pressured all night by CDMS power duo Ben Rivard and Pete Holowchuk. On the
other end contributions from Joe Jewitt and the other defensemen was not enough
to counter the loss of captain Mark Missal.
