Chelsea’s Petr Cech believes that
Portsmouth goalkeeper David James should be England’s number one for the World
Cup this summer.
Cech made a big contribution to
Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over Portsmouth in the FA Cup final, saving a penalty
from Pompey midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng.
However, the Czech Republic
international saw his opposite number keep Portsmouth in the match with some
James also guessed the right way
and would have saved Frank Lampard’s missed penalty if it had been on target.
Even though Portsmouth was
relegated, James played well when not injured and feels he still deserves to be
the first choice keeper.
James will compete with Robert
Green and Joe Hart for the starting job, but Cech believes that the 39-year-old
should be Fabio Capello’s starting goalkeeper in South Africa.
“I think he has got most
experience of all the English keepers and he made some great saves in this
match,” Cech said.
