Unsung heroes recognised

Two of Cayman’s Unsung Heroes were
formally recognised at a recent awards ceremony hosted by FirstCaribbean International
Bank.

Elma Deldee Ebanks and Madda
Whittaker were both winners of the bank’s 2009 Unsung Heroes programme, which
recognises individuals whose commitment to helping others might otherwise go
unnoticed.

Ms. Ebanks, often referred to as
the Florence Nightingale of her local community, is a tireless provider of
assistance and companionship to the elderly and infirm.  She is actively involved with two retirement
homes and engages regularly in devotion field trips and crafts.

Ms. Whittaker has been involved
with the Girls’ Brigade, and sets aside a percentage of her salary in order to
provide lunch money and school uniforms to underprivileged students.

“Our winners set a remarkable
example to the community. Both have given selflessly of themselves and their
time to help others less fortunate,” said Elvis Coward, Unsung Heroes Programme
Coordinator. “We are delighted to be able to honour them in this way and I
congratulate both Ms. Elma and Ms. Whittaker on being the bank’s Unsung Heroes
for 2009.”

Each winner received a
commemorative vase and bouquet, as well as US$6,000 to contribute to their
community work.

The awards ceremony took place at
the Marriott Beach Resort Hotel and was attended by Governor Duncan Taylor,
Premier McKeeva Bush, and Minister of Community Affairs and Housing, Mike Adam.

Managing Director of FirstCaribbean
International Bank in the Cayman Islands, Tom Crawford, said: “We look forward
to receiving the nominees for the 2010 Unsung Heroes programme as we continue
to promote the positive community spirit, which is still very much alive in the
Cayman Islands.”
