Hardly anyone in local
hockey saw the Barracudas being champions. But the WestTel Adult Roller Hockey
League side pulled off the feat on Tuesday night.
The squad beat the Cayman
Destinaton Management Services Islanders 7-4 in game three of the best-of-three
Cherry Cup final. The WestTel arena of Kings Sports Centre saw tons of hard
hits, awe-inspiring goals and tense play.
In spite of the efforts of
Patrick Bourque, Jean-Louis Beaudet and the CDMS team, the Barracudas would
prevail. Leading the way was Jeff Danter, who had the most goals in the match.
Fareed Hosein was a star in the clutch.
As one might expect loads of
celebration ensued after the final whistle. For a team that had never won a
championship they made good of the moment. From Colin Wilson to Brad Galbraith
many players had quality time with the Cherry Cup.
The stats show that the
under-dog final was a surprisingly high-scoring affair. In spite of finishing
below the Budget Beavers and MEPCO High Rollers in goals during the regular
season both clubs combined for 36 goals in three games. The Barracudas snatched
game one 9-2 and CDMS won game two 10-4 to force Tuesday’s thriller.
