A group of locals are trying
to accomplish a run for charity.
Walkers currently has a team
in training that is ‘Racing to Save Lives’ in ‘America’s Most Beautiful Bike
Ride’ around Lake Tahoe, Nevada to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society on June 6 2010.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health organisation dedicated to
funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. Its mission is
to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the
quality of life of patients and their families. Since its first funding in
1954, LLS has awarded more than $680 million in research funding.
Team member Glen Inanga
spoke about the upcoming event.
“Despite the glorious
scenery and clean mountain air around Lake Tahoe, I have been told that the
100-mile course will be particularly demanding, especially for those team
members who haven’t ridden a bike for a while,” Inanga said. “There are a
series of demanding peaks to negotiate and the altitude ranges between 6,300
feet and 7,100 feet above sea level, with numerous rolling ascents and descents
adding up to over 2,600 vertical feet of elevation gain. I am hoping that it does not rain on the day
of the race though we have been told to expect it to be freezing cold
particularly at the start of the ride.
“It has been both a
challenge and a pleasure training for this event. In fact, I think I may have
become addicted to endurance cycling. Definitely a fun way of keeping fit.
Although I successfully completed a 100-mile social ride here in Cayman about a
month ago, the main challenge will be the long climbs in Tahoe as Cayman is
relatively flat. I expect that the spinning classes (three times a week) I have
taken will be a useful method to prepare for these climbs.”
The Walkers team appreciates
all of the donations recieved so far. To date, Team Walkers has raised
$46,353.56 which is 58 percent of the team’s fundraising target of $80,000.
