Students debate air privatisation

Students
at the University College of the Cayman Islands were interested participants in
a debate on Wednesday. The seminar dealt with the issue of whether air
transport in the Cayman Islands should be privatised. Speaking in favour of the
proposal was Edward Jerrard, lecturer in air transport management at the
University. He highlighted ways in which airlines and airports differed in
their approach, funding and economic issues and examples of the competitive
market. Gilbert MacLean, former aviation minister, spoke against the proposal
and said that Cayman Airways had clear objectives, only one of which was
chasing profit.

Students
asked questions and organisers said that the debate was intended as an academic
exercise to stimulate discussion.
