Silver Rain offers the Midas touch

When I was told I would be having a
Pure Gold Radiance Facial Treatment at the La Prairie Silver Rain Spa at the
Ritz-Carlton, I thought ‘pure gold’ was perhaps a term of excellence, like an
Olympic gold medal. Instead, I discovered that part of this decadent facial
involved literally having 24-karat gold put on my face.

However, it seems I was not
entirely mistaken in my first assumption, as La Prairie flags this treatment as
its “newest gold standard in anti-aging”.

My facial, carried out by Silver
Rain’s lead aesthetician, Hefina Rees, began with a face cleansing with a foam
cleanser and an emollient cleansing lotion. In diagnosing my skin, she
pronounced it to be sensitive and a little starved of hydration.

For me, extractions are usually the
downside of every facial. I know that among the fabulous steaming, massaging
and applications of creams and oils and serums, the dreaded extractions await,
but Hefina was incredibly gentle and still did a thorough job, leaving me with
no redness or sensitivity afterwards.

A facial exfoliation followed, and
then she applied a Cellular Energising Mask.

More than just a facial

At Silver Rain, a facial is never
just a facial. This one was accompanied by a hand and foot treatment that left
my extremities feeling as soft and as pampered as my face.

Before the facial began, I was
invited to lie on a table in the pristine treatment room, as the music I’d
chosen to accompany my treatment – Dido – gently played in the background. The
table is designed to include a foot spa filled with heavenly smelling vanilla-
and jasmine-infused water, in which I was told to place my feet.

Now, Hefina took my feet out of the
water, dried them and exfoliated them, along with my hands and arms. She then
rubbed them with massage oil and then gently placed my hands and feet in heated

While my hands and feet were being
kept warm to allow the oils to better penetrate the skin, she returned to my
face, giving me a fabulous eye massage, using Cellular Radiance Eye Cream,
followed by a face, neck and décolleté massage. It was enough to almost put me
to sleep, but I didn’t want to miss a minute of this luxurious treatment by
nodding off.

Then it was time for the next mask
– and that’s where the gold came in. The Pure Gold Infusion and Warmed
Hydrating Mask feels like the epitome of luxury. A few drops of Cellular
Radiance Concentrate Pure Gold, which contains micro-particles of 24-karat
gold, as well as quartz, liquid crystals and light refractors promise to
“visibly lift, firm, brighten and energise”. Plus, it truly makes your skin

Final touches

While that mask worked its magic,
it was time to remove the hand and foot mitts. Hefina took them off one at a
time, massaging each newly exposed hand or foot. Cellular Hand Cream, an
intensely moisturising formula, ensured my hands stayed hydrated for the day.

After removing the mask, Hefina
treated my lips to some Cellular Renewal Concentrate, a deep hydrating
treatment that repairs and plumps the lips – and smells like oranges.

The final touches of this treatment
involved an application of Anti-Aging Eye Cream, with SPF 15 to protect against
the sun’s rays, and a great shot of hydration to my skin with Moisture Care
with Radiance, which left my skin feeling dewy for hours afterwards.

The Pure Gold Radiance Facial lasts
90 minutes and costs US$310.
