Band scores with No 2 hit overseas

Big in Japan is definitely a term
that can be used to described the Cayman band now riding high in that country’s
singles charts.

Newly-formed hip hop/R&B band,
thE iZ, are number two in Japan with their single Tonight George Town. The song
is off their debut Beach Club album, which got its first public airing at a
multimedia launch party in Grand Cayman Beach in and was renamed iZland Music
for the Japanese market.

The news represents an outstanding
achievement and is thought to be a first for any band coming out of the Cayman

‘Overwhelming news’

Reviewed and tipped to do well by
the Weekender earlier this year, the breakthrough could be just what the trio
of singer/songwriter Jason Gilbert (JG), Looney Love (Lonney McField) and Cotterell
(Stephan Cotterell) need to raise their profile beyond Caribbean shores.

The band’s manager, local radio
personality Dane Ramoon, said the single, released on 10 August, has come
tantalisingly close to being  number one
based on play rotation and the number of downloads, as well as the volume of requests
made to Japanese radio stations.

Mr. Ramoon, who hosts The Morning
Grind on HOT 104.1 and Dane’s Backyard on X107.1, said: “The band is delighted
with their first-ever top 10 hit. We decided to release that single because of
all the tracks on the album it represented where the band is from most.

He said, “[The news] has been very
overwhelming for the guys, but we are very grateful for the opportunity to take
our talents to a larger market. We hope to make our young people see all things
are possible through hard work and determination.”

The nine track album, released in
Japan on Wednesday, was recorded at Hopscotch Studio in Grand Cayman and at J
Eagle Studio in Kendall, Florida.

Other iZ updates

In other iZ-related news, although
still in negotiations and waiting for a break into the lucrative US market, the
band recently signed a distribution deal in Japan. JG, who already has a solo
deal with EMI Stateside – the same label that the likes of Beyonce and Diddy
are signed to – produced WTP a track off the latest Eminem album, Recovery, the
biggest selling album of the year.

The band’s manager also said that
thE iZ Ltd. has signed a deal with Digicel Group Caribbean for ring back tones.

Cayman band with interntaional aspira-tions, thE iZ’s track Tonight (George Town) is current number two in the Japanese singles charts.
