Blazers hot or cold

This week should be an interesting
one for the Frank Hall Homes Blazers. With a pair of games on their schedule
they have a chance to either jump to the top of the mixed netball league or
slide near the bottom.

Last night (Thursday) the Blazers
faced Roma on the netball courts at Truman Bodden Sports Complex. Both squads
went into that match unbeaten as Roma won their season opener over Multi-Built
30-7 while Blazers took down reigning champs All Stars 31-26. On Saturday the
Blazers take on David Wilson and Multi-Built at 6.30pm in the final game of
week three of the 2010 Cayman Islands Netball Association Mixed League.

Of all the sides signed up for this
season, the Blazers have been the biggest surprise. Beating All Stars in the
season opener was totally unexpected. A fresh face to the sport, Frank Hall
Homes have enjoyed having a number of netball stalwarts on the club. In
particular Gavin Watt and Molly-Ann Moore have stood out (both are former
members of last year’s All Stars side).

Coaching the side is Nicola
Williams, a steady presence on the netball court for roughly the last decade.
Williams, who also played for All Stars, states her side is playing well
offensively thanks in large part to Watts.

“Gavin’s game is almost perfect,”
Williams said. “Then again all of our players have contributed to moving the
ball forward into our attacking end. I would say though that Kayon Clarke, Eckerd
McField and Ovaine Monteith are top players that can help All Stars close the

Two new additions the side hopes to
debut this week are Cynthia Collington and Gary “Butcher” McLaughlin.
Collington defected from the All Stars during the off-season while McLaughlin
is a local basketball star with the Wolves team. Williams states both will be
needed against Multi-Built and the rest of the league.

“Gary is a new player to the co-ed
netball league and we saw some superb defending from him (he was MVP in the
recent national basketball league). Kimesha Walters is also new to co-ed
netball but she has shown great defence, Missing from our line-up was Cynthia
Collington, who will be an added asset to our defence on her return.”
