Chicago blast

Young baseball players in Cayman
continue to perform in an annual Chicago competition. At the 2010 Chicago White
Sox Skills Challenge Cayman Islands Little League representatives were the top

This year’s challenge was held on 4
September at US Cellular Field, the home of the Chicago White Sox professional
baseball team. Four qualifiers from a White Sox camp held in Cayman back in
January attended. They were Dequan Bennett, Chris Messer, Kevin Woods and
Justin Derrick.

All came away with awards and
accolades. Bennett won the senior division and Messer took third in the same
group, keeping US participants to only one spot in the top three. Woods placed
third in the 9-10 age group and Derrick was just out of trophy position in the
7-8 age division. Interestingly, half of the kids have represented Cayman in
the sport this year. Bennett was on the local little league travel squad for
14-18 year-olds, called the international baseball team, that competed in
Miami. Messer was part of the local little league’s travel team for 11-12
year-olds that took part in the Caribbean regional qualifiers (held in Puerto
Rico) for the 2010 Little League World Series.
