Volley of funds for girls’ home

The Frances Bodden Girls’ Home has
received a cheque from the Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation.  The generous donation was the result of the
‘Play. Love. Serve.’ fundraising event recently run by the beach volleyball
players and members of volleyball association, which included a fashion show,
silent auction, and beach lifestyle party at Margaritaville.

The Frances Bodden Girls’ Home was
damaged by fire almost two years ago and its residents had to move out while
repairs and renovations were undertaken. Angela Sealey, CEO of the CAYS
Foundation which manages the home, explained that work is still under way and
is nearing completion but that furniture, a stove, and other items are still
needed before the girls can be moved back in. Sealey said: “This very kind
donation from the volleyball federation will certainly help, and we are most
appreciative of their support.”

Event coordinators, Taylor Burrowes
and national team player Jennifer Bily, volleyball federation president, Noel
Williams, vice-president, Kennedy McGowan, and public relations officer, Carl
Brown, presented a cheque for CI$1435 to Sealey last week. The CIVF executive
committee said they were delighted to support such a worthy cause. Bily said:
“We are very happy we can contribute to this cause. In the initial phases of
planning our fund raising party and knowing we wanted to give to a charity and
give back to the community, the Frances Bodden Girls home quickly came to mind.
It seemed like a natural fit. We can certainly appreciate the residents’
ability to overcome extraordinary challenges.”
Burrowes said: “Our brightest star in Cayman volleyball right now is, of
course, the newly crowned Miss Cayman, Cristin Alexander who is a national team
player. Cristin has pledged her support to youth development programmes such as
this one that has CIVF partnered with CAYS to promote participation in sports
such as volleyball, which can help promote pro-social behaviour in our youth.”
