Brad Pitt and Will Ferrell are
coming to Grand Cayman this month.
At least their voices are.
Dreamwork’s November release of
MegaMind — the 3D digital animation film featuring the voices of Pitt and
Ferrell — will be coming to Hollywood Theatres at Camana Bay.
This continues the recent success
of 3D motion pictures in Cayman, as the introduction of 3D into the Grand
Cayman market place has been very well-received, according to Erin Anderson,
vice president of marketing at Hollywood Theatres.
She said the theatre “is
experiencing a resurgence in excitement for the movies,” and “has seen a marked
improvement on titles being featured in 3D formats over the same film that would
have previously been featured as a 2D presentation.”
3D films have been growing in
worldwide popularity over the past several years, with 24 films using 3D
technology released in 2010. There are
34 3D film slated for distribution in 2011.
The most successful of all 3D films
to date has been James Cameron’s 2009 epic Avatar, a movie that has earned more
than nearly $3 billion worldwide.
Avatar was one of the primary
catalysts of the 3D excitement.
The top earner of 2010 so far has
been Pixar’s Toy Story 3, which just surpassed the $1 billion mark.
Jim Chabin, president of the
International 3D society, says the entire world is going 3D.
“All screens as we know them are
probably going to be 3D enabled,” he said.
“As the price comes down, you’re going to see 3D everywhere. It’s a wave of technology that’s sweeping
across all industries.”
The theatres still show 2D films
successfully — David Fincher’s The Social Network being the most recent 2D
hit.
“Hollywood Theatres’ 2D films
continue to attract enthusiasm from audiences,” Ms Anderson added.
2D film fans can look forward to
the awards season releases in late November and December. Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere,
an independent-spirited 2D picture, is scheduled to hit theatres toward the end
of the year.
Darren Aronofsky, director of The
Wrestler, is at the helm of the highly anticipated Black Swan, a 2D picture
that promises to be up for some major awards during Golden Globe and Oscar
voting time.
These obvious art films will be
competing with some of the big blockbuster 3D films of the holiday season.
Tron: Legacy, Yogi Bear and
Gulliver’s Travels are all 3D holiday releases scheduled to be released at
Hollywood Theatres Camana Bay.
