More than two-thirds of the
respondents to last week’s caycompass.com online poll think solar is the best
alternative energy for the Cayman Islands.
Of the 529 total respondents, 354 of
them – 66.9 per cent – thought solar was best.
“Is it not obvious sunshine is
something that is in abundance in the Cayman Islands?” said one person. “It’s a
no brainer.”
“Solar is not noisy like wind
energy and is readily available,” said someone else.
“You’ll always have sun,” said
another respondent.
“I’d love to implement solar energy
at my home, but prices have to come down for the equipment,” said another
alternative energy supporter. “I can’t wait until it does.”
The next largest segment of respondents
– 77 people or 14.6 per cent – thought wind was the best source of alternative
energy for Cayman.
“Especially on the east end of the
island, which has winds for most of the year,” said one person.
“Wind and solar,” said someone
else. “We have such an abundance of both.
Forty-six people – 8.7 per cent –
thought nuclear was the best sort of alternative energy for the Cayman Islands.
“Assuming you can ascertain a
disposal site for the waste as part of the project plan, nuclear is the way to
go, at least for Grand Cayman,” said one person.
“I also think that [Liquefied
natural gas] should be considered to replace diesel fuel,” said another nuclear
advocate.
Forty respondents – 7.6 per cent –
thought water was the best alternative energy for Cayman and 12 people – 2.2
per cent – said they didn’t believe Cayman needed alternative energy because
they liked diesel and electricity.
Some respondents suggested
waste-to-energy as the best alternative for Cayman and others thought several
forms of alternative energy should be used here.
“Solar, wind and water should all
be used as a form of energy for the islands,” said one person.

Ya…but one big problem. CUC. Until the government can make CUC agree, not to put regulations on how much solar energy someone can generate, while still tied into their grid.
It could be as simple as this. Any extra energy you generate. We as CUC will accept, but not pay you for. Fuel costs would be down for generation. So CUC could recoup costs that way. And, this way, worst case scenario. They only get their profits cut in half at the worst possible income. (ie EVERYONE and thier dog has solar power, and enough of it to generate 12 hours worth a day). Which realistically ain’t gonna happen.
