Five Caymanian high school students
and Cayman Law School interns have gained valuable hands-on work experience at
law firm Mourant Ozannes.
The internship programme included
stints in the firm’s core legal practice areas of funds and finance and
commercial litigation. Students also spent time within the corporate services
and compliance and accounts departments, giving them a comprehensive insight
into the operation of a Cayman law firm.
The five interns were Shelley do
Vale of the Cayman Islands Law School; future student of the CI Law School
Aaron DaCosta; and high school graduates Alicia Thompson, Rashana Singh and
Rushell Reid. Each of the interns spent several weeks at Mourant Ozannes’ offices
between the months of June and August.
Shelley do Vale, who just entered
her third year at the Cayman Islands Law School, said: “My internship at
Mourant Ozannes was a wonderful opportunity to put my theoretical knowledge
from law school into practical experience. The lawyers were very generous in giving
their time and knowledge while showing me all aspects of mutual fund
registration, private equity, trusts, partnerships, banking, litigation and
allowing me to join them in court,” she said. “It has reaffirmed my commitment
to complete my legal training and I look forward to the next stage of my legal
career.”
While Shelley continues her
education at the CI Law School, Aaron plans to complete his A-Level studies at
Cayman Prep & High School this year prior to a 2011 CI Law School start.
Both Alicia and Rashana have entered their A-Level studies at Cayman Prep &
High School this year, while Rushell has started her studying for her bachelor’s
degree at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York.
Partner and head of the Cayman
office Neal Lomax noted: “Through this programme and other initiatives, Mourant
Ozannes is committed to the development and progression of Caymanians who have
the aptitude and determination to achieve in the field of law.
“We hope that we have provided
these interns with a useful introduction to our legal and corporate administration
business. Our intern programme helps us to identify promising individuals who
may be offered the opportunity to progress to our scholarship and articled
clerk training programmes,” he said.
