Pirates Week starts in earnest
Thursday with several events that are guaranteed to whet the appetite.
Breezes by the Bay starts their
kick-off at 5pm, with the Seattle Seafair pirates arriving around an hour
later. The Wharf takes up the baton during the evening, too, with DJs and
giveaways promised.
The Steel Band Competition,
meanwhile, takes place at Harbour Drive. This Chevron/Texaco-sponsored event
will offer a medley of jazzy, poppy, classical tunes blended with the
irresistible energy and brilliance of the Trini instrument.
Last year, thousands of steel band
lovers were in attendance, and Cayman’s talented youngsters did not disappoint,
with energetic and skilful soca in evidence. It starts at 7.30pm and the total
cash prizes are $5,000, so it’s not just bragging rights up for grabs.
