It’s enough to make tails wag and
ears perk up.
Cayman Animal Rescue Enthusiasts’
biggest fundraiser of the year – for a sell-out crowd at Guy Harvey’s Island
Grill last Saturday- brought a profit of somewhere in the neighbourhood of
$15,000 for the welfare of local animals.
“We had to turn people away,” said
Tracey Golding, a volunteer director for CARE.
Tickets, sponsored by Pet Paradise,
went quickly, making for a full but happy house at the waterfront restaurant,
as attendees perused numerous auction items, sipped wine and savoured canapés.
“To all those who bought tickets
for the wine tasting and auction,” Golding said, “I’m happy you all came …
the island is very overpopulated with dogs right now.”
Money raised will help cover the
costs of monthly spay and neuter surgery, as well as relocate those dogs and
puppies fortunate enough to get adopted overseas through CARE’s alliance with
no-kill shelters and various families across the US. CARE also has a “catch,
spay and release” programme for feral cats to humanely help reduce the
population.
“We’re just absolutely floored by
the support of the community,” said Lesley Agostinelli, another of the
organisation’s volunteer directors, along with Alana Jule. “All in all, it was
fantastic!”
Sponsored in part by Blackbeards
fine wines and spirits, the event, organised in large part by CARE volunteer
Tara Hopwood, featured nine wines from four countries, as well as a special variety
of Guy Harvey chefs’ canapes. Master of ceremonies Jay Ehrhart of Radio Cayman
handled announcements and prize giveaways, and all of the auction items were
handily sold.
“Everything went really well,”
Agostinelli said.
