The Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman
held its 4th Annual Key Leader event recently at the St Ignatius campus.
The weekend event was deemed a huge
success, with 80 students in attendance, including six from Cayman Brac. The
co-ed students ranged in age from 14 to 18. Student facilitators, most of whom
were past Key Leader attendees, were also on hand to assist and build on their
leadership skills.
The Key Leader programme is
designed to inspire young people to achieve their personal best through service
leadership. Over the course of the weekend, students, through a combination of
lecture and activity participation, embrace the five principles of Key Leader:
personal integrity, personal growth, respect, building community and the pursuit
of excellence.
This year’s lead facilitator, Jane
Erickson, from the US, is an adviser for a Kiwanis K-Kids club and was the
2007-08 President of the Kiwanis International Foundation. Assisting Jane was
Dick Peterson, director of the Key Leader programme for Kiwanis, and local
Kiwanian Jan Michael Maw, who acted as assistant facilitator.
Mr. Maw was ecstatic about the
response, sharing that “every participant walked away from the event with a
better understanding of how to be a servant leader, someone who serves their
team, neighbourhood and community first.” He praised the lead facilitator,
saying that “she was phenomenal and helped make a great program even better.
He went on to say, “As an assistant
facilitator, I witnessed first-hand the impact of the programme. Many children
became more confident about themselves, realizing the importance of integrity
and honesty in all facets of their life. They began to see themselves as people
who can make a difference in Cayman. High school students, and their parents,
should be jumping up for the opportunity to be a part of this leadership experience.
There is nothing else like it here in Cayman.”
Each year the event is offered for
a $25 registration fee to interested students, made possible through the donations
of the Cayman business community. This year’s contributors were RBC, Citco,
Cayman National, A.L. Thompson, Arch & Godfrey (Cayman) Ltd, Scotiabank and
Water Authority.
