The Jim Kelly Trophy was presented to Brad Marqhardt at the WNRC anniversary social at Rackhams recently.
Marqhardt who finished sixth and second in the two-race handicap series had to overcome stiff com-petition and fast times from fellow club members eager to wrestle the trophy from last year’s winner Pam Travers.
Both Krissy Dooling and Caroline Cahill ran under 20 minutes for the three mile course whilst trying to chase down the early starters.
The nature of the event and the staggered start means each runner has to overcome their own time handicap. Runners in the second race being handicapped based on their times in the first race, fastest runner starts last.
The fun event produced some excellent personal bests including stellar performances from newcomer Rocky Balboa (second overall) and rising star Sarah Graham (third overall).
“Brad was always a fast runner and now he’s back training and really improving, Sarah looks stronger and faster every week, who knows where it might lead,” said Watts.
Like many runners and triathletes, WNRC members are training hard for the upcoming marathon relays, half marathon and marathon events on 5 December, starting and finishing at Breezes
by the Bay.
With only three weeks to go the hardest, longest training runs are happening right now all over the island.
Watts, who is an accomplished triathlete, added: “I really enjoy watching some of our fast runners and occasionally trying to keep up but we have all abilities at WNRC including beginners and run walkers. It’s so inspirational to see in-experienced runners training for their first
long event.
Every week people are running further than they have ever run before, further than they ever imagined they could, really pushing their boundaries.
We can always do more than we think we
actually can.”
