The North Side Pirates Week
Committee continues to use every opportunity to showcase their district’s rich
heritage, and by extension, the Caymanian heritage.
“We deem it a great honour to
invite all our residents and visitors alike to experience North Side at its
best on Thursday. 18 November from 11am until 2 in the morning. The first 200
guests will be given a sweet North Side treat as you enter our gates,” said
organisers.
Demonstrations
There will be an array of
educational demonstrations, showcasing many of the dying art forms that played
an important part in the economic development of these islands. Guests have the
opportunity to meet the seniors from North Side as they relive Cayman from yesteryear.
“There will be demonstrations on
the art of making rope and wampers, tatting and plaiting thatch, sugar cane
juicing and pounding almonds. In years gone by people drove to North Side on
Sundays to get Ms Lurline’s peppermint candies, and this candy-making art will
be reenacted by one of their residents. All this and more can be seen while you
sway to our North Side Kitchen Band and the rhythms of the steel band. Enter
the conch blowing competition, climb the grease pole and win up to $200 in
cash, or listen to the latest gossip under the almond tree,”
organisers said.
“Do bring along your kids. A
special park is outfitted with amusement games just for them.”
Connoisseur
For the culinary connoisseur, there
will be mouth-watering local foods and beverages, as well as the must-try
decadent cakes, tarts, jams and jellies –
not to mention Ms Lucille’s bush teas.
“After 6pm you will be in for a
treat as our own Ms North Side Pirate’s Week Queen 2010 will be parading her
costume along with two young North Siders, Jaide Dixon and Danielle Brown,
first and third-place winners of the recently held Cayman’s Got Talent 2010.”
Revellers can top off the night
with a bonfire and fireworks displays while dancing under the stars to the
sounds of local entertainment, said Jay Ebanks, chairman of the North Side
committee.
“The contributions by the residents
of our district were heart-warming as many came together to work at our
district queen competition, fashion show and on our district float that
depicted the journey of education in North side.
“We are thankful for the
contributions of our sponsors Jenny Markham, Cayman Foam, Bob Watler,
Christiana’s Events, Cox Lumber, Paramount Carpet, Dunkin Donuts, the
Department of Tourism, Infinity Construction, Digicel, Reflections, Platinum
Collections, Kings Distributors, IMP, Willie’s Fresh Juices and Produce and the
Pirate’s Week Festival Committee.
“The Water Cay Park at Kaibo public beach has the right
ambience for all of our guests to enjoy a wonderful day. We have been preparing
to welcome and entertain you since January 2010 – so come out and enjoy our
North Side flavour.”
