Mel Tagalog reached great heights in darts during 2010. So far it seems that looks to continue in 2011.
The Filipino star was named the first player of the month for January. The accolade comes from the Cayman Islands Darts Association as part of a new competition called the Trevor Lloyd Cup. The tournament is part of national team qualifiers for 2012 and is in memory of former association member and darts aficionado Trevor Lloyd who passed away from a sudden heart attack at age 60.
Association president Paul Anglin states Tagalog’s prize is the first step in a new aspect of local darts this year.
“January’s top male player in the Trevor Lloyd monthly cup is Mel Tagalog while the top female player is Michelle Terry,” Anglin said. “Both played spectacular darts to earn their positions. The turn-out was not exactly what I expected but hopefully the upcoming months will see an increase in the number of players.
“Saturdays also seem to be a bad day to host it so I will be holding it on the last Sunday of each month as of 27th February 2011 at 5pm at Corner Pocket. Hopefully more players will show. Association members Cassius Anglin and Frankie Martyr will be in charge of score keeping. I look forward to working closely with them both.”
