For fans of fast and modified softball, the game returns too.
The Fast/Modified Pitch Softball League sees its first pitch on Saturday 5 March. The Cayman Islands Softball Association will have their traditional opening ceremony at 6pm at the Cayman Islands Little League’s Field of Dreams on field four with a host of players, fans, honoured guests and sponsors hitting the diamond in appreciation and celebration for the beginning of a new season.
“The main objective for this season is to highlight on the importance of the involvement of players in keeping the association going,” said the league director and coach Marlon Thomas.
“It is crucial in times like these that players and fans support our programs and especially our fund-raising activities. It’s becoming more difficult each year to retain sponsors for our teams and the only way forward is to find creative ways of generating resources to fund our league and ultimately to develop our own facilities.”
The 2010 season’s champions and runners-up will be receiving their awards and trophies as well as the league’s sponsors. AI Rentals Patriots won the male league while 2009 champions Latinos are now the runners-up. Caledonian Bank Wildcats won the female league after defeating CADC Stingers who held the championship for the past two seasons.
Michael Hemmings of Mike’s Ice will be receiving this year’s honorary plaque on behalf of the company. Mike’s Ice is the 2010 league’s most outstanding sponsor for their contribution towards the Fund-raising and Social Events Committee. Jose Webster of Jose’s Escape Service Centre will also be honoured for his 27 years of support to the association.
In addition to the opening ceremony there are three games scheduled to take place that evening. The 2010 male league’s champions will be playing against the runners-up at 6:30pm on field four. The female league kicks off at 8:30pm with games being played simultaneously on fields one and two.
The association is welcoming Western Union/Fidelity Bank who is sponsoring Challengers Female Team along with National Concrete, as well as newly added Ready Mix Concrete who will be co-sponsoring Patriots.
The association, which includes volunteers like Kathleen Rankin, is once again looking forward to a successful season and thanks all of the players and fans for their continued support.
