False alarm evacuates airport

The Owen Roberts International
Airport in Grand Cayman was evacuated for more than an hour Monday afternoon
after a fire alarm went off in the terminal.

Passengers on the air side and land
side of the airport were told to gather outside the airport building and
passengers on board a Cayman Airways flight from Cayman Brac and an American
Airlines flight from Miami waited onboard the planes on the airport apron while
fire services crew and airport officials tried to trace what had tripped the
fire alarm.

Passengers at the airport said the
alarm went off shortly after 2.30pm. The all clear was given about 3.35pm and
officials said it had been a false alarm.

Airport officials said that it was
the Cayman Islands Airports Authority’s policy to evacuate the airport when a fire alarm
sounds.
