One of the most colourful parties Cayman can boast is the annual Mardi Gras shindig at Kaibo.
Billed as The Greatest Show On Island, the Kaibo Mardi Gras Circus takes place on Wednesday, 9 March from midday to midnight and boasts a non-stop 12-hour DJ extravaganza on stage.
DJs lined up to do their thing include Alexi, Oneworld, Minx, DJXS, DJ Lin, Renegade and more, plus live musicians and world-class contortionists from Vivendi and MCs Jason and Morgan of Z99.
The 12th annual Mardi Gras will be thrilling, and there are several different rooms and areas to enjoy during this year’s Tortuga Rum Company-sponsored event.
The Stoli/Feuillate VIP Big Top, for example, is host to the famous balcony party. Expect private entertainment from trapeze artists, a circus self-portrait photo booth and other circus performers. This area features a swift-serving four-sided granite bar, luxury bathrooms and a ringmaster’s lounge. There’s an inclusive, seated three-course lunch and free drinks, plus free limited edition T-shirts, goody bags and giveaways.
Advance sales are $100, which also includes a complimentary ferry crossing from SafeHaven, a free boat slip pass and fast track queuing – VIP tickets are limited to 200.
The largest full bar at Mardi Gras is the Carib Carousel Main Bar, right at the heart of the party and extended to twice its normal size in honour of the occasion. Mojito fans will no doubt gravitate toward the Exotic Cats Flor de Cana Mojito Bar, which is dedicated to this quintessential Caribbean taste and features Kaibo’s skilled mixologists getting ready with the rum, mint, sugar, lime and soda.
Meanwhile, on the sand dance floor, the Caribbean Coconut Beach Bar is right amid the action and offers a great view of the live acts.
The Amarula Elephants Mudslide Tent is the first place on Kaibo Beach to get a beverage from the ferry dock and also serves soft drinks, waters and shots.
Refreshments are also available at the SafeHaven Carib Bar, and look out for the Grolsch Cannonball Jet Pack – a mobile beer dispensing unit – the Jager Hot Shot Lion Taming Girl and the Tortuga Rum Company Food Cabana right at the centre of the party, offering Caribbean Beach cuisine plus popcorn and candy floss.
How to get there
There will be three ferries running continuously from SafeHaven at a cost of $10 per round trip. The last returning boat leaves Kaibo at midnight. There’s also a free park-and-ride service by road with free shuttle buses from the old Cayman Kai resort site.
The buses will run continuously, leaving about every five minutes. Mooring fee for private boats is $100 for the day.
Entry to the party is $5 in advance for an official wristband. Professional security, paramedics and police officers will be on duty at the site to guarantee safety.
No alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages (aside from kids’ sippy cups), food, weapons or fireworks will be allowed on-site and will be confiscated. The Kaibo Mardi Gras is a child-friendly event and organisers suggest a PG rating for all minors under 18.
No animals will be allowed access – too many people and loud music is not a good environment for them.
