More than 100 people turned out for the inaugural Walking Workout at Camana Bay, sponsored by the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens on Sunday, February 27.
Participants were taken through a one-hour workout circuit from The Paseo, across Camana Way, up the floors of the parking garage to the waterway by Cayman National Bank.
The workout consisted mainly of walking in different ways: forward, backward and sideways.
Participants also had to incorporate various other moves, such as squats, lunges, twists and small jumps, as well as upper-body work to challenge their balance and coordination.
Dottie Rau, a conditioning therapist from Physical Intelligence, Ltd, was the main instructor for the workout.
She said the main goal was to “educate the body how to move gracefully, efficiently and safely and to improve respiratory function of the body, reach the muscles groups [and] focus concentration during exercising …,” among other things.
Participants, for their part, enjoyed the workout and many of them wanted to know if it would be done on a regular basis. The Lions Club, which put on the event as a fundraiser, is considering holding it biannually.
Sponsors were Cayman Neurology Pain Management, KYI Imaging, Harmonic Health Consultants, the Heart Health Centre, Physical Intelligence, Stingray Kisses and Ropers Janitorial Service.
Lion President Wendy Wiltshire thanked all the participants for contributing to a worthy cause and allowing the club to continue and expand its work in the community.
She said, “For the last 17 years the LCTG has been living up to its motto ‘We serve’ by performing voluntary and community services in the Cayman Islands and through your support today, you have allowed us to continue working with the elderly, the youth, our Sight and Diabetes Awareness programmes and our many other social services projects.”
