Lara flies to golden start

The Cayman Islands CARIFTA swimming
team enjoyed a brilliant first day at the championships in Barbados with Lara
Butler winning gold in the 100 metres fly on Saturday.

Butler set a personal best in a
national record time in the girls 15-17. Her brother Geoffrey took bronze in
the boys 15-17 1500m freestyle. Lara also set a national record in the 200m
breaststroke heats.

Tori Flowers finished fourth in the
800m free in 9 minutes 22.07 seconds which is the Pan American Games qualifying
standard. The Cayman team got off to a great start with 21 of the 23 swims in
the first session setting personal bests.

Coach Dominic Ross said: “This is a
terrific start. I sense another medal or two in our future.”
