Jamaica dominated CARIFTA

The Cayman Islands may have only won one medal at the CARIFTA games in Jamaica – Jorel Bellafonte’s silver in the 1500 metres – but for the 27th year running Jamaica swept the board as the top nation.

The fact that they had home support in Montego Bay as they extended their amazing winning streak in the LIME CARIFTA Games in the 40th staging of the championship at the Bay Sports Complex in St James with 66 medals over the Easter weekend. The haul included 33 gold medals, 21 silver and 12 bronze.

Bellafonte looked set to get another medal in the 800m but got tangled up about 10 metres from the line with Barbadian John Haynes and fell onto the in field and both were disqualified. A furious Bellafonte, who attends school in Jamaica, angrily approached Haynes afterwards and had to be led away.
