Former Trinidad and Tobago defender Dennis Lawrence had a roller coaster ride in his first full season on the coaching staff at Wigan Athletic in the English Premier League because they did not secure survival until the final day.
Lawrence, 36, was relieved to see Wigan survive. The football gods smiled on them as they saw West Ham, Blackpool and Birmingham go down. He said it was a really fantastic experience working with an excellent coaching staff headed by Roberto Martinez and assistant Graeme Jones, together with first team coach Graham Barrow and the rest of the backroom staff.
Lawrence is assistant coach now at Wigan having played for Wrexham and Swansea City. He also had the honour of captaining his country and played in every minute of the Soca Warriors’ 2006 World Cup campaign in Germany.
Despite the scary moments as Wigan battled relegation, Lawrence thoroughly enjoyed the campaign in what he considers to be the best league in the world.
He will always go down in Trinidad & Tobago folk lore as the player whose goal in 2005 secured their qualification for the 2006 World Cup Finals after a 1-0 win over Bahrain in Manama.
