Local racers have a few days to get in on Jet Around Cayman.
This Wednesday, 8 June 2011 marks the registration deadline for this year’s personal watercraft meet. Registration fees vary according to class with six categories on tap: pro-open, expert-open, rookie, amateur, female and veteran.
Jet Around Cayman is slated to take place next Monday 13 June. The Queen’s holiday event takes place as usual at Seven Mile Public Beach on Grand Cayman. LIME and Monster Media are the major sponsors this year. The meet is in its 15th year, having been founded and organized by Kenny Rankin of Monster Media. This year’s event is slated to feature 36 racers, which is near the 2009 peak turnout of 37 competitors.
Much of the focus will be on the international competitors taking part. Team Guadeloupe returns to defend its title though this time with a new group of racers. Cedric Ramassamy, 22, recently finished second in a open class Kawasaki 300 race and Patrick Gounouman, 30, finished third in the 2011 Championship of Guadeloupe. Pascal Gounouman, 24, is one of Guadeloupe’s best Kawasaki 300 riders, Davy Vaitilingon, 25, was world champion in 2007 and Fabrice Limon, 32, is an up-and-coming rider in Guadeloupe.
In addition Rob Greenwald is slated to take part. The American has over sixteen years experience in professional racing and is a four-time US national champion.
Besides the international racers, the Ministry of Sports Tourism for Guadeloupe will be present here along with TV production companies from Guadeloupe and Canada.
In addition to the race, a number of activities will be taking place on the beach. There will be four-on-four beach volleyball and football tournaments organized by the Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation and Cayman Islands Flag Football Association respectively. There will also be a kids area featuring a wowballs expo, a bikini show, live music and performances from local dance crews.
The build up to race day also promises to be action-packed. An official kick-off party, featuring a live concert, is slated to take place at Margaritaville this Friday, 10 June from 8pm to 1am.
Registration and waiver forms may be submitted to Monster Media offices at Rankin’s Plaza. Alternatively they can be e-mailed to [email protected]. Race fees must accompany forms. Call 949-8423 for more information.
