Cayman Associated School of Karate held their first adult graduation for the year at the King’s Sports Centre last week with 13 adults from the organisation tested for yellow to brown belt, supervised by Sensei Greg Reid.
All participants passed their examinations. The grading was both extremely physical and technical. Students had to do both strength and flexibility tests prior to grading. Then technically the exam was based on Kihon (basics), Kata (forms), Kumite (sparring) and Kobudo (weaponry). The passing grade for everyone was above 87 per cent. This means all got a confirmed rank with no probationary ranks given.
They also had four brown belts David Mitchell (Cayman), Mark and Marta Jewell (USA) and Louis Payne (England) sit mock exams for their Udansha (black belt).
This is a requirement by the international organisation before they can attempt the black belt rank test. C.A.S.K. Karate has black belt exams once a year, in December.
As a special honour, Sensei James Crooks was awarded the Godan (5th dan black belt) which is the highest technical rank ever given out in the Cayman Islands. It came as a surprise for Sensei James who has been a driving force and inspiration in Caribbean karate for over 35 years. The award was fully deserved.
C.A.S.K. Karate has eight active black belts training at its Hombu (headquarters). They are now looking forward to their youth graduations on 25 June from 10:30am to 12:45pm for anyone interested in watching Sensei Greg Reid put them through their disciplines.
C.A.S.K. Karate offer youth, women’s and co-ed adult classes at the King’s Sports Centre. Karate is amazing for physical fitness, self-defence, confidence, leadership skills and a great way to make new lifelong friendships.
