One of the marquee initiatives hosted annually by the Cayman Music and Entertainment Association is only weeks away.
Muzaic – a pun meant to indicate the events’ variety of entertainment – promises to offer a fun-filled weekend from 1 to 3 July, according to organisers.
As part of the events, the Association’s executive committee has awarded the 2011 Icon Award posthumously to Dr. Melano McCoy for his lifelong dedication to and love of music, evidenced through his having given music lessons to many Caymanian musicians who still perform professionally. Mr. McCoy was also the visionary behind the Cayman National Choir, which still thrives today.
The festival, now in its fourth year, seems to be growing in popularity as it features concert line-ups that include top local bands and DJs.
Association President Jean-Eric Smith said, “As president, I see the Muzaic primarily as a fundraiser for the CMEA but equally important as an opportunity to fill a gap in the local entertainment calendar, thereby providing the Department of Tourism with another culturally based event which can be used to market our country and its musical offerings overseas.”
He added that the event is unlike any other because of its content.
“Muzaic is by design intrinsically different from any other festival previously showcased locally, and this year will proudly boast events on both Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac simultaneously, establishing it as a truly Caymanian festival.”
All performers are local talent and eventually, the festival is envisioned to grow to incorporate the culinary arts and the visual arts.
The awards event will recognise emerging and established musicians and entertainers. The Icon Award recipient is chosen by the Association’s executive committee; all other award recipients are selected by member nomination.
The Muzaic Subcommittee asks that musicians send in a short written explanation about their relationship with Mr. McCoy or how he impacted their lives. This can be emailed to [email protected] Also, nominations for awards are now open for submission by its membership. All nominations must be sent by 14 June to Assistant Secretary Renwick Conolly at [email protected]
