Six messages say ‘No to mega quarry’
MLAs Arden McLean and Ezzard Miller led a team that erected six signs over the weekend protesting the proposed development of the East End Seaport east of Half Moon Bay.
The signs – with messages on both sides – are in the area that would become a channel to the inland port basin. They are on government property, attached to a seawall built after Hurricane Ivan and nicknamed Lovers Wall.
The signs were previously displayed outside the William Allen McLaughlin Civic Centre in East End when developer Joseph Imparato met with more than 200 people last Thursday night to answer their questions about the project.
The six messages included: Preserve 500 years of our heritage; Keep enjoying this view; East End, stand up for our future; 600’ of coastline destroyed; This project will destroy our water lens; and Our future or Imparato’s profits? All end with the tag line, “Say NO to the mega quarry”.
Mr. McLean and Mr. Miller, from East End and North Side respectively, are their constituency’s lone representative in the Legislative Assembly and have voiced their opposition to the seaport proposal, which was made public in October 2010.
One concern has been that the developer would dig out some 14 million cubic yards of fill and leave a hole. Mr. Imparato said he would pay for developing “the hole” when the question was raised at last week’s meeting.
The sign installation on Saturday and Sunday mornings was accomplished with the help of Robinson Rankin of East End and Emile S. Levy of Bodden Town, among others.
