Charterland had it mapped out

Team Charterland was on a mission to atone for last year.

A solid regular season campaign would give way to a lackluster postseason in 2010. The same would not be said in 2011. The squad defeated the Shockwaves by over 30 points in game two of the Cayman Islands Basketball Association national men’s basketball league division two finals.

The victory seals a two-game sweep at the University College of the Cayman Islands hall. The championship is the first for the side under Charterland’s sponsorship and the second in the last three years (back when they were sponsored by Digicel).

Starring for Charterland would be finals Most Valuable Player Jonathan Rosa. The American had a double-double in both matches with his strongest showing arguably coming in game one when he notched 20 points and 13 rebounds. Rosa, who was on last year’s squad that saw the Personnel 2000 Warriors emerge champions, states this year’s triumph was a team effort.

“It was just nice to be able to finish out the season with Charterland,” Rosa said. “The last couple of years the season has always ended so late that I was off island for the majority of the playoffs. It was great to get out there, run and play well through the end.

“We had all the dynamics of a good basketball team. Each player has such individualized and specialized components of the game. Scott Murray is a slasher who can get hammered and still put the ball in. Jeremy Strickland and Stewart Connelly are sharpshooters that play incredible defence. Ovaine Monteith is the fast-break king followed by Nathan Smith. Conrad Duncan and Mark Cook have great post presence. Every player is different so our squad would dramatically change depending on who was in. But there was always someone putting the ball in the hoop and everyone was hustling on defence.”
