Mel Tagalog was a powerful force in the sport of darts last year. Thus far in 2011 he has continued his dominance.
The Filipino sensation added yet another prize to his trophy case. Tagalog guided his Snipers co-ed darts team to the 2011 Corner Pocket Team Cup. The competition took place this month after the end of the national darts league, considered a warm-up for the highly touted local tournaments later this year.
President of the Cayman Islands Darts Association Paul Anglin witnessed Tagalog’s brilliance at the Cup. He states the Filipino star is one of the best on-island at the moment.
“Mel once again proved himself by taking his team to the finals and winning the overall title,” Anglin said. “I got to admit that the guy is awesome and he is playing extremely well.”
Tagalog’s Snipers squad featured a host of Filipino players. Leading the fray was team captain Rodan Asuncion with the rest of the team members being veterans Jasper Esguerra and Celso Ocampo Jr alongside two relatively new players in Liza Montecarlo and Danilo Orivida.
Interestingly Anglin was more than a passive spectator as his team the Bandits took on Snipers in the final. Anglin steadied a crew of experienced players featuring the likes of Edsell Haylock and Miriam Rodriguez. In spite of losing out in the title game, Anglin states the event was a success overall.
“On the whole it was a fair and tight competition. Everyone threw some good darts and the atmosphere was electric. Seven teams took part, all of them played in the national league just before it and the competition was fierce. I think when it was all said and done two of the better teams ended up in the finals.”
