Cayman’s star swimming brothers are competing many miles away in China this week.
The swimming portion of the 14th FINA World Championships kicked off on Monday in Shanghai. The two qualified representatives from the Cayman Islands, Shaune and Brett Fraser, are scheduled to compete in two events each. First up will be Shaune in the 200 metre Freestyle event on Tuesday 25 July.
FINA’s new qualifying standards have meant that their event options are limited this time around and that only one of them can compete in each of their two main target events for the 2012 London Olympics.
The main focus of this event for the brothers is Olympic qualification. In addition to the 200m free, Shaune will take on the 100m Butterfly event. Brett is set to compete in the 100m Freestyle and 200m Backstroke events.
Shaune and Brett will have help representing Cayman in the form of physiotherapist Bethany Cook and coach Martyn Wilby from the University of Florida. All have been in Shanghai since last week making final preparations. Before that the group spent a few days in Singapore adjusting to the time change and acclimatising themselves in advance of the competition.
