Cayman’s national Under-17 Girls team recently stepped into unknown territory.
Yet its star prodigy shined at the recent Centro Basket championships held in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. La-Torae Nixon, 14, averaged 17.7 points per game and finished ninth overall in scoring. She would post the fourth highest rebounding average, finished eighth in free throws made and third in blocked shots, averaging 4.7 per game (highest in the tournament).
All of those numbers point to a magnificent performance for someone stepping into the regional tournament for the first time. Unfortunately Cayman as a team did not fare well, losing all three of its matches.
For the record 2011 marks the first time a Cayman team has competed in a Centro Basket tournament. It should also be noted that the squad, steadied by head coach Redver Ebanks and assistant coach Billy Fenton, did not play in warm-up competitions against any of their competitors prior to Centro Basket.
